If we allow the dismantling of net neutrality and hand it over to ISP’s and the free market we will win. Hear me out friends, we’ve heard the speculation that ISP’s could throttle data, bundle packages, and force you to pay for things you don’t want, in order to get the things that you do. Sounds gloomy doesn’t it? Some greedy corporation that wants to stick it to the little guy by making the Internet expensive and difficult to navigate how dare they!!!
You know what this reminds me of? BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO. Awww come on, you remember! you’d rent a movie back in the day and end up forgetting to bring it back on time and had to pay that late fee. A late fee that often times compounded day after day and ended up costing you more than actually buying the movie for yourself. It was bad times for movie renters everywhere as there were lawsuits being flung back and forth between blockbuster and its customers. It was dead beat renters vs. over reaching merchants in court room after court room. The late fee, also known as a “predatory late fee” was so lucrative for Blockbuster that it accounted for 16% of total revenue in 2000 alone!

Ask the younger generation today what they know about block buster video and you’ll more than likely get a stare and dumbfounded look in response. The younger generation has no clue what blockbuster video is because a company came along with no late fee’s ever that let you keep the movie for as long as you want, for get this — 5 bucks a month!!! Yes, it was NETFLIX! the great thing about the private sector is that Creative innovation will always win the day as it was this abusive relationship between Blockbuster and its customers that gave rise to its own demise, in the form of Netflix.

Today Netflix comes installed on brand new out of the box tv’s, amazon fire sticks along with a host of other popular platforms and boasts a staggering 110 million monthly subscribers. Netflix now casts and produces its own for network shows that rival any of your favorite Friday night sitcoms on any of the traditional big networks.
Do not fear friends, for it is once again upon us, the American people to decide how internet service providers can best attract and keep us as loyal paying customers. And if they think for one second, that throttling our data and bundling packages into expensive headaches is going to keep us around, they are in need of a history lesson. When it comes to net neutrality it is better to give the powers of it to the consumers instead of the government. Ajit Pai has this one right, it is the American people that will decide how ISP’s should present the internet to its customers. Because if we don’t like it, someone else will come along in the foot steps of Netflix and sell us what we want at a price we can’t refuse. Long live the American consumer, the most powerful influence on the planet!
